The River Irthing, which drains the area around Spadeadam, the Northumberland National Park, flowing south west to it’s confluence with the Eden near Warwick Bridge.
The Irthing forms the border between Cumbria and Northumberland, and the Roman border of Hadrian’s Wall runs along most of the river’s length. From the late 13th century, this area was a battlefield, with raiding, arson, kidnapping, murder and extortion being common. Family feuds and violence were a way of life. Hopefully your fishing will be much less eventful.
A very peaty water, the Irthing runs the colour of black coffee, or Theakstons Old Peculier, (depending on your preference) throughout the year.
