Beat 7
River Caldew: Millhouse
2 Tokens
Brown Trout, Occassional Salmon
Wading Difficulty 5
The River Caldew flows from the fells around Caldbeck and the northern flanks of the Skiddaw Massif, (John Peel country), continuing north to Carlisle where it joins the Eden. The boulder strewn substrate of this section of the Caldew creates dazzling riffles punctuated by deep silty pools. Wading can be very hazzardous among the incredibly slippery boulders. This beat was recently coppiced to enhance the river habitat quality and improve the fishery.
Surrounded by a beautiful setting of rolling hills with the northern fells of the Cumbrian Mountains providing the backdrop. The area is peppered with small villages and hamlets, Caldbeck and Hesket Newmarket well worth a visit, and some stunning walking.
