Beat 21

River Caldew, Newlands Beat
2 Tokens
Brown Trout
Wading Difficulty 5
900m of right bank fishing

STOCKS: There are certainly a few Brown Trout around and some decent specimens have been seen at the very top of the beat.

USEFUL INFORMATION: Another 2km up the road is the village of Hesket Newmarket, where there is a pub and village shop, or alternatively on the B5305 heading towards Sebergham there’s the Sour Nook pub which serves food.

This is most certainly difficult and challenging fishing and not for the faint hearted! If you don’t stumble down the steep bank you will probably lose a few flies in trees when casting! It would be recommended to fish with a friend, however the wildness and tranquillity of the area should make up for the difficult access.

ACCESS AND DIRECTIONS: From junction 41 on the M6 heading north take the left turn on the B5305 towards Sebergham, continue on this straight road for around 14.5km. Then take the left turn towards Caldbeck, continue on this road for around 2km, there is then a left-handed bend in the road, on the opposite side of this bend is a public footpath, with space for parking on the green verge. Leave space for vehicle access to the gateway further down the track.

From here walk down the road opposite Newlands Grange, head across the fields to the river. Beat 21 starts here, look for the Beat Start sign and token box. There are some good pools and runs at the start of the beat which deserve to be fished well, after these, the access and terrain along the beat becomes more challenging.

The bank becomes increasingly steep and heavily wooded. Before this stage, get down to the river’s edge and fish upstream, being careful with slippery stones. These parts are probably best fished with waders either in the river or from the edge. Alternatively go wide of the area and into the field above and continue walking upstream. There is then a field which runs parallel to the river, which is not extensively wooded, fish the river here and up.

At the very top end of the beat where the two rivers confluence there are some large pools which are certainly worth the walk up. Some good fish have been seen here.
