River Caldew, How-gill
2 Tokens
Brown Trout
Wading Difficulty 5
1100m of right bank fishing

RIVER CALDEW: This is a fantastic section of the Caldew, which has been left largely untouched. Access is difficult in parts and there isn’t that much casting space but there are some intriguing pools and runs, with both wide and narrow sections.

STOCKS: This section has not been frequently fished but should have some decent, ‘very wild’ brown trout, and perhaps even the occasional salmon!

USEFUL INFORMATION: Another 3km up the road is the village of Hesket Newmarket, where there is a pub and village store, or alternatively on the B5305 heading towards Sebergham there’s the Sour Nook pub which serves food.

ACCESS & DIRECTIONS: From junction 41 on the M6 heading north take the left turn on the B5305 towards Sebergham and continue on this straight road for around 14.5km. Then take the left turn towards Caldbeck, follow this road for around 1km and take the small right turn along the How-Gill farm track just before the right-handed bend in the road. Follow this track for approximately 200m up to the farm house and court yard where you should see the ‘Go Wild’ Parking sign, park here and walk through the yard, bearing left then right up the track and public footpath. The Token box is located here beside the track on a fence post.

Continue along the track, which is part of a public footpath and through the stock gateway, making sure to close it behind you. From here carry on along the path and through the next field down towards the woodland and river. There is a small stream that runs into the Caldew down here. This is marked with a Beat End sign. From here you can fish upstream for 1100m, the terrain gets progressively steeper and harder to navigate as you move upstream but there are some very nice dubs and runs further up here. It may be easier in places to fish in the river rather than from the bank due to the lack of casting space in places.
