Beat 19
Trout Beck, Long Marton
2 Tokens Brown Trout
Wading Difficulty 3
800m left bank fishing
TROUT BECK: This beat starts just above beat 6; the area has seen little fishing pressure so these trout are wild! There are some nice dubs and runs here but not that much cover so some pools will have to be approached quietly.
STOCKS: There should be some decent trout up here in the larger dubs, 1/2lb trout have been seen just up stream of the bridge at Long Marton. Also keep an eye out for Brook Lamprey, which have been seen spawning in big numbers just below the bridge.
USEFUL INFORMATION: There’s a pub in Long Marton up the road, which does food during lunch hours and there is also the town of Appleby in the other direction which is a bit further away but has plenty of bakeries and a sandwich deli if you fancy a greater choice.
ACCESS & DIRECTIONS: Access to beat is from the A66 east of Kirkby Thore, the road dips and widens to accommodate the turning to Dufton and Long Marton. Take this road and follow it round to the right for about 1.5km, at the first T-junction turn right, immediately after this right turn is a farm yard, the Go Wild Parking sign and token box are located here. Park in front of the sign and make sure that you do not block any gateways. From here you need to walk back down the road for approximately 200m, past the T- junction and downhill through an avenue of trees towards Long Marton, until you reach the bridge.
Fishing here is upstream from the bridge. Enter through the gate on the right hand side of the road just before the bridge and walk through the river field, this first field is part of another Go Wild beat. Beat 19 starts when you reach the second field; from here there is around 800m of single left-handed bank, (when looking downstream). From here, fish up the river past the viaduct through two more fields until you reach the Beat End sign. The later stages of the beat can get very steep and difficult to walk along in places, so take your time and wear appropriate footwear and if possible fish with a friend.
