Brown Trout
Wading Difficulty 1
820 metres of double bank fishing
RIVER PETTERIL: The river Petteril rises over Greystoke, passes under the M6 at junction 41 and runs into the Eden at Carlisle. The river has been affected by run-off from the M6 but there is hope of improving the river, which has good potential for brown trout and juvenile fish.
STOCKS: There should be a good number of brown trout here, though they have not been fished for regularly, so exact details are not known.
ACCESS & DIRECTIONS: The beat is situated near junction 41, however to access the beat proceed north from Penrith along the A6 for around 1.5 kms, where there is a small road which turns to the left opposite Milestone House. Turn off the A6 here and carry along this road for about 500m and take the 2nd left onto a small farm track. Follow this winding track for approximately 200m and over a railway bridge. You will then approach the river Petteril, so go over the small bridge and park on the right-hand side of the track marked ‘Go Wild Parking’. Be careful here to allow enough room for farm machinery to still use the track.
The Token box is located on the right-hand side of the track on one of the fence posts. From here the river can be fished double sided above and below the bridge. Access at present is over the fence, though there is hope of a stile in the near future. Below the bridge (downstream); the beat continues for around 320m and is marked Beat End on both sides. Above the bridge (upstream) fishing continues for around 500m until the M6 road bridge and is also signed Beat End on both sides.
