Hilton Beck
Plunging down from Scordale the Hilton Beck has suffered from severe flooding in recent years caused by cloud bursts over old mine works. We are working with The Environment Agency, MOD and English Nature to solve the excessive erosion caused by to much gravel in the river from the old spoil heaps. You cannot help but be impressed by some of the damage caused in this, one of the upper Eden’s most picturesque valleys.
Stocks
Hilton Beck has supported strong numbers of trout and juvenile trout in the past but has not been fished for some time. Try looking in the deep pools below the footbridge.
Access and Directions
Turn off the A66 to Appleby in Westmorland, drive through the village and take the 2nd turning left when leaving the main village, from here carry along the road under the A66 towards Hilton for about 1.25 miles. Before you reach Hilton you will pass a small lay-by on the right with a go Wild parking sign.
Park in the lay-by here beside the river, be sure not to park in front of the gate and the block farmers access! Access to the river is through this gate, make sure the gate is always closed after use.
Walk along the field fence and wall to the start of the beat by the swinging gates over the river marked Beat Start, the Token box will also be located here. There is fishing both sides of the river from here down for 850m. There is a Beat End sign on the left bank (when looking upstream) at this spot. There is then a further 250m of single bank fishing on the right hand side until the small footbridge and Beat End sign.
